Jana Natya Manch (www.jananatyamanch.org) is a Delhi-based group, known primarily for its street theatre, which completes 37 years of work in March 2010. The group is known for its innovations in the street theatre genre, and its commitment to a popular, entertaining, robust, progressive culture. The group has continued working in the face of daunting odds, including the murder, in performance, of its founder-member, Safdar Hashmi.
After decades of a peripatetic existence, the group now wants to build a theatre space, where it can rehearse, but also a space that can be made available to other cultural groups for rehearsal, workshops and performance. It will be dedicated to encouraging engagements with community groups, to foster a culture of understanding and cooperation, aesthetic excellence and intellectual stimulation.
The space identified by Janam is in the lower-middle class locality of Lalita Park, just across the river from ITO, about 5 km from Connaught Place. We hope to raise rupees one crore to acquire one floor and the roof of an existing building and equip it with basic amenities for theatrical work - suitable flooring for performance, lights, sound system, and so on. The space, we hope, will also have a small library, a film corner, a book shop, and a coffee shop. It hopes to become the kind of space that every city needs, but somehow we just don't seem to have!
Your contribution can help Janam realise its dream.
