AWAGHA RANG EKACHI ZALA, a two-act musical family drama is written by Dr. Meena Nerurkar. It depicts a very tender story about Appa Velankar - a well known Kirtankar and Jeny - his America born Indian disciple. The play highlights the rich culture and music of the Kirtan format vis-a-vis the growing popularity of fusion music.
A stubborn, not-ready- for-a- change, keertankar, Appa, is constantly getting into arguments with Sopan - his son, who wants to modernize the ancient art by adding a touch of fusion music. Appa has not allowed Mukta - his daughter, to marry the boy she loves, because he belongs to a different caste. And for the same reason had asked his elder son to leave the house.
The play revolves around the separated family of Appa and has its own tense yet affectionate moments.
Jenny - the charming teenager from US has come to learn the traditional art of performing kirtan under the guidance of a veteran like Appa in the true Gurukul way. Jenny tries sincerely to learn the music and style of kirtan and while doing so decides to re-unite the Velankar family.
Is she successful in her endeavour? Does Appa teach her the Indian traditional kirtan? Is Sopan allowed to perform his fusion Kirtan?
Has Mukta finally eloped with her boyfriend?
With AWAGHA RANG EKACHI ZALA, the Marathi Sangeet Rangbhoomi comes alive again. Padmashree Prasad Savkar returns to the theatre after the hiatus of 25 years to perform the role of Appa Velankar - the keertankar.
