ABHINETRI is about Durga Roy, who like most women of her generation just wanted to be a good wife and a dutiful daughter-in-law. But destiny had a different plan for her. In spite of having a family, with a husband, a son and a daughter, she was forced into leading a lonely and isolated life. She had to take up a job of a stage actress, in an era where actresses were looked down upon, and shunned by the Bengali bhadralok. Durga Debi`s pain and suffering was seen as a stage performance and her sadness was applauded by the audience. None could see the real pain behind the performance, the pathos behind the facade. Just when Durga Debi accepted this as inevitable and had learnt to live with it; destiny added another cruel twist to her life. She was suddenly confronted with her husband, her son and her daughter, entering her life as strangers, but she had to suppress all her feelings. In order not to disrupt their respectable lives, she had to suppress the truth. After all, in the eyes of the society she had become an untouchable. She had become an actress.
The play has been written by Shamita Mukherjee and has been directed by Samrat Mukherji.
