Prof. Naba Mondal is fascinated by elementary particles and has been involved in pioneering research in India and abroad to discover and study them. From God particle (Higgs boson) to Ghost particle (neutrinos) physicists have discovered many such elementary particles over the last 100 years. They are the building blocks of our universe. But unlike normal matter all around us, we cannot see these particles with our eyes. How do we know these particles exist? What are the tools needed to detect these elusive particles? And why is this study so immensely and wonderfully fascinating and beautiful? Come and see this world through Prof Mondal's eyes at this Mumbai Local.

Vocalist and composer Shubha Mudgal will join Mumbai Local on 11th August where she will talk about searching her voice and of exploring identity within tradition. For a singer, the voice holds many connotations. It refers not only to the musical sound and quality of a singing voice, but also to the musical lineage, aesthetics, style, predisposition, values and beliefs of the artiste. The challenge of finding one's voice is intense for a student of Hindustani classical music, studying and exploring a hoary tradition that has always encouraged seekers to find their own voice as it were, even while according respect to the past. And the challenge is only further complicated and intensified if you happen to be a student of Hindustani classical music who also enjoys working with DJs and film music, bhajan and hip hop! In this Mumbai Local, musician Shubha Mudgal will share the story of her search.

About Subha Mudgal:

Born into a musically dedicated family, Shubha Mudgal has been trained by some of the finest musicians and musicologists in India. Trained by Pandit Ram Ashreya Jha from whom she continued to receive instruction till 2009, Shubha also received the guidance of Pandit Vinaya Chandra Maudgalya and Pandit Vasant Thakar. She went on to learn stylistic techniques from well-known maestros Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki and Pandit Kumar Gandharva. She also received training in thumri from Smt. Naina Devi and is thus one of the most versatile and popular performers of Hindustani music.

In addition to being a performer, Shubha has also won recognition as a composer. Her repertoire of medieval mystic and Sufi poetry includes rarely heard texts from the Vaishnava Pushti-marg poets, as well as the Nirguna poetry of Kabir, Namdev, Amir Khusrau, Nath-panthi poets and other Sufiana poetry. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Padma Shri from the Government of India in the year 2000.
