The Pen All-India centre invites you to its PEN@Prithvi session- 'Theatre According to Me'. This programme will bring together a number of young-generation theatre persons, including Karishma Attari, Warren D'Sylva, Padma Damodaran, Ajitesh Gupta, Gurleen Judge, Amol Parashar, Pooja Shah, and Neha Singh, who have been requested by Ramu Ramanathan, the sutradhar to read their favourite passages from a play. There will be three rounds of readings, during which the participants will read their chosen passages. The sutradhar will introduce each reader and present the introduction of the theme for each of the three rounds, as below:
Round one will focus on a passage that caused a creative revolution. It could be plain and simple revolutionary. Or provide a modern art aesthetic, or earthy folk energy. This could be any piece of writing (monologue, soliloquy, dialogue) that entertained the participant intellectually - it could even be the first piece of theatre they came across, and which impressed them.
Round two will focus on a passage about freedom. Speakers might make quirky associations between here ANTIGONE or MUDRARAKSHASHA or GALILEO or TUGHLAK. They could revive an obscure East European playwright or celebrate any of the renowned playwrights.
Round three is about laughter. The focus is on Wit and Humour. The passages could be culled from Aristophanes or Bhasa, Dario Fo or Satish Alekar, the routines of Vaudeville or the doings of a Vidhushak. It can be biting satire; it can be a series of gags. Speakers can rely on high thought or feel free to be banal.
The evening will flow from reader to reader; the idea is to celebrate the best of theatre.
Playwright, director and theatre activist, Ramu Ramanathan's plays include SHANTI SHANTI, IT'S A WAR (1993: All-India Best Play Award, given by The Hindu), MAHADEVBHAI (1892-1942) and COLLABORATORS (which won the BBC Radio Playwriting Regional Award for 2003). Eight of his plays have been collected into the Orient Blackswan volume, 3, Sakina Manzil and Other Plays.
