William Shakespeare's classic saga of love, avarice and hatred will find a new, contemporary setting in Masque's rendition of the play that opens on 27th February 2015 at the NCPA. The production will also see the debut of Aditya Birla Group's Aadyam initiative. Aadyam, is bringing 5 new plays from reputed theatre groups, to coveted venues in Mumbai and Delhi. THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is one of the five new plays. The plays promise a holistic experience for the audience that extends beyond the stage. As part of the initiative, each play will be staged nine times across the two cities.

Says Vickram who has directed and acts in the play, ''In THE MERCHANT OF VENICE we take the audience into the world of the great gamblers, rich merchants, businessmen, socialites and the prodigal youth. Imagine the world of Paris Hilton, Las Vegas, Wall Street and Manhattan all rolled into one and where everything is a game of chance. Imagine the 21st century.''

About Masque:

Vickram Kapadia, who launched Masque in 1987, first directed Luigi Pirandello's play SIX CHARACTERS IN SERACH OF AN AUTHOR. This was followed by productions like A.R.Gurney's THE DINING ROOM, David Henry Hwang's DANCE AND THE RAILROAD, Girish Karnad's TUGHLAQ, William Shakespeare's and Eduardo Elba's MARATHON among others. In 1998 and 2001, the company collaborated with two other theatre producers - Rage and Ohinniyan - to create the hugely successful "Going Solo" evenings - a series of monologues.

BLACK WITH EQUAL, a satirical black comedy set in a housing society (written as well as directed Vickram), is the company's long-running play, and was staged for over 7 years.

Masque ventured into the world of Hindi theatre in 2013 with the Hindi version of BOMBAY TALKIES, which Vickram had written and directed in English for the company Orchid Room Experiment in 2011.
