SHANTATA! COURT CHALU AAHE is Satyadev Dubey's rendering of a Marathi play of the same name by the noted playwright Vijay Tendulkar. It was Dubey's only film as director and is a powerful tale of middle class morality and gender roles.
The film follows a day in the life of a theatre group conducting a mock trial of one of their members. This colleague is a teacher, Ms Benare who does not fit easily into the moral codes of middle class society. As the trial proceeds what starts out as broad comedy develops into tragedy as the supposed fictional world of the trial begins to uncannily reflect her reality.
Dubey stages all of this in a room that slowly darkens as the day fades, shadows closing in on the main protagonists as they hunt for the truth, tearing away all the veils of privacy and decency to leave Benare naked to their judgement, destroying her as they expose her.
The film will have sub-titles in English.
Writer, translator and theatre critic Shanta Gokhale will speak about the film and be in discussion with the audience and the curators after the screening.
