In a bid to strengthen the existing theatre scene in the city, Aadyam, an initiative by the Aditya Birla Group returns in its second edition with five premiering plays by the city's well-known theatre companies. Aadyam's vision is to provide financial assistance to these groups, while they can solely focus on their creative endeavours.

Last year, we saw five plays by Aadyam - QTP's GOD OF CARNAGE, Rage's SIDDHUS OF UPPER JUHU, Masque's MERCHANT OF VENICE, Akvarious's THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and Arpana's MERE PIYA GAYE RANGOON. These productions are still running at theatres successfully. This year, we will witness another set of plays that expanse across genres such as the Konkani Tiatr, musicals and drama.

Cinematograph's I DON'T LIKE IT AS YOU LIKE IT, which is directed by Rajat Kapoor, will open the festival in the first week of March in the city. The drama follows the journey of a circus troupe that experience life's highs and lows, amidst the painted smiles and forced enthusiasm.

Moving on, we will also witness Aparna's LORETTA helmed by theatre director Sunil Shanbag. The drama dives into issues such as politics, language, father-son dynamics and more. Up next will be Aarambh's LADIES SANGEET, which is directed by Purva Naresh, and is a take on gender stereotyping. Rage's trio - Rahul da Cunha, Shernaz Patel and Rajit Kapur - strike back with the production of TWELVE ANGRY JURORS, which is a famous drama surrounding a man guilty of committing patricide. The last on the list is Essay Communications' CHAKKAR CHALAYE GHANCHAKKAR, which is spearheaded by theatre director Salim Arif. It is an adaptation in Hindi of William Shakespeare's COMEDY OF ERRORS by Gulzar saab.

Divya Bhatia, who is the artistic director and curator for the plays at Aadyam explains that this year the team went a step further in their dialogue with the directors asking them what they would like to showcase. He also adds that, ''Through the plays that were staged last year and the ones that have been picked to be staged this year, we have tried to make the process of engaging with theatre more accessible and something one can relate to, while demystifying it from the notional clutches of the purely cerebral.''
