With the aim to showcase original and contemporary writing, Akvarious Productions has organised the Fringe Theatre Festival for the first time in the city. The festival showcases 13 performances of 7 shows across 5 venues in the city, namely The Hive, The Jeff Goldberg Studio and House of Wow.

Akvarious Productions have more than 50 productions under their belt, and have now shifted their attention to performing at smaller, more intimate venues. Calling this shift the future of theatre, theatre practitioner Akarsh Khurrana adds that, ''theatre moving into alternate spaces is a good sign. It shows flexibility on the practitioners' part, initiative on the new venues' part, and a sign that there is an audience with theatre needs.''

Since some of the plays have already been performed, we ask Khurrana about the kind of response he has received, and he says, ''The response has been extremely heartening. Venues and our ticketing partner have been very supportive. If January is anything to go by, I'm not stopping for the rest of the year.''

The last weekend of the Fringe Theatre Festival will present:

Akvarious Aurchestra, January 31, 7.30pm, The Jeff Goldberg Studio, Bandra (W)

About the piece: A collective of the musical talent from Akvarious performs songs from and inspired by plays of Akvarious. The playlist features original compositions along with covers of songs by The Beatles, Mehdi Hassan, Mumford & Sons, and from musicals like Grease and West Side Story.

SUBURBAN LEGENDS, January 30, 7.30pm, The Jeff Goldberg Studio, Bandra (W)
About the piece: A young couple on the verge of marriage are forced to reassess their relationship while parked on Bandstand. A struggling actor runs into a star at Yacht Restaurant and Bar, and life stories are shared over cheap drinks. These and more such stories set in Bandra, and about the people who reside in it.

BAYAN, January 31, 9pm, House of Wow, Bandra (W)
About the piece: In Turkish, ''Bayan'' mean women. In the Indian subcontinent it means a statement or an expression. So quite obviously, the ladies take the stage. Expect an oestrogen-filled evening. The play features writing by Karishma Attari, Apoorva Kale, Lucky Vakharia and others.
