Be it Jeeves's impeccable problem-solving techniques and crisp suits, handsomely-rich Bertie Wooster's penchant for finding himself in trouble and the hilarious situations created by English author PG Wodehouse, who is credited to be one of the most-widely read humourists of the 20th century; the Jeeves and Wooster novels are a treat to read. Every page is filled with brisk humour. The books have been widely adapted for the stage, films and television.
On the 100th anniversary of the publication of the first Jeeves and Wooster novel, a production from London's West End will be touring India, for the first time. The piece is directed by award-winning British theatre director Sean Foley and adapted for the stage by brothers Robert and David Goodale.
For the Mumbai tour, Matthew Carter will essay the role of Bertie Wooster, Joseph Chancewill be playing Jeeves and co-writer Robert Goodale will act as Seppings. The play has had a houseful run across the UK and Europe, and was also the recipient of the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2014. The play is also anticipated to make its appearance at New York's Broadway in 2016.
Though fans of Wodehouse might find resemblance of the play with Wodehouse's The Code of Woosters, the play also borrows instances and dialogues from other books in the same category as well.
JEEVES AND WOOSTER IN PERFECT NONSENSE will be performed at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA from January 8th to 10th, with shows at 4pm and 8pm on all three days.
