Junoon's Mumbai Local with Anurupa Roy..."An Epic Retold: The Puppet and its Presence"...
October 5, 2016 4:11:32 PM IST MTG editorial
Puppetry is such an exciting and imaginative art form, and Indian mythology is such a treasure-chest of stories. Put the two together, and you're sure to witness something spectacular! Just imagine the Mahabharata being played out in puppetry. The story unfolding, not through a human body but a manipulated puppet's form. The characters are not living actors, and yet they come alive.
Now, what if certain parts of the puppet's body are erased? What of you only saw segments of their form? Would you still see the entire character? Would it make a difference to the story being told?
Anurupa Roy - one of India's most exciting and acclaimed puppeteers and founder of Katkatha Puppet Arts Trust is invited by Junoon for its monthly 'Mumbai Local'programme. According to Anurupa, the vocabulary of the puppet is informed by the human body, and so it is also an extension of it. She feels when we watch the inanimate embody a character, it triggers something different in our response vis-a-vis a live actor. And of course, imagination has a lot to do with it!
Anurupa has been working on the dismembered presence in puppetry, a style of performance where only a part of the body is shown and yet, the audience feels the entire puppet's and its character's presence. Sounds fascinating? Get ready to delve deeper into this concept as Anurupa talks about her latest production- the Mahabharata.
