Junoon's 'Mumbai Local' with contemporary dancer and choreographer Preethi Athreya...

Why do people dance? What does the body give us that words do not? And what movements constitute dance – in other words, when does a movement become dance?
Preethi Athreya’s most recent contemporary dance project is CONDITIONS OF CARRIAGE, based on jumps. 15 or more dancers jump together for over an hour, holding us enthralled with what they create, communicate and celebrate. Recently, at the Southbank Festival in London, over a 1,000 people stood all around, on footpaths and bridges, to watch this wonderful performance.
For Preethi, each experience with creating dance opens up new questions. “Why do people dance?” she asks. “What do we want to communicate through dance? What brings us to dance? What does dance allow us to explore? What makes some movements more compelling than others? What are the accidents of discovery?”
At this Mumbai Local, the audience will journey with Preethi’s questions, explorations, experiments and discoveries through dance, from her beginnings in Bharatanatyam to her work today. You can look forward to wonderful anecdotes of epiphany, delightful and quirky demonstrations, and a playful, thoughtful engagement with the possibilities of our bodies.
