About IPTA Mumbai's ICDC:

Inspired by Prithviraj Kapoor's career as a complete theatre person, IPTA Mumbai held its first Inter Collegiate Drama Competition (ICDC) in 1972, the year of his sad demise. The late Kaifi Azmi initiated this activity and entrusted Ramesh Talwar with the responsibility of evolving the mode of the competition, framing the rules and getting the whole competition organized.

Ramesh Talwar was very ably supported by his co-convenor Subhash B. Dangayach, Javed Khan, Raman Kumar and other IPTA members who came into the world of theatre through their college plays. Their collective experience of having staged plays in various college competitions gave birth to the entire format of this competition. The most important aspects kept in mind were ensuring fairness in judging as well as acknowledging the difficulties that the young students may face while preparing for the competition. Inculcating a sense of theatre discipline in the students has been an integral part of this competition.

The first IPTA-ICDC was held at Tejpal Auditorium and has since been held at the same venue. Dr. Chandraprakash Dwiwedi, a regular participant, once rightly said that IPTA's ICDC is like an 'acid test'. If you could achieve something here, you would certainly achieve something in the world of performing arts. Over the years there have been many artistes, writers and directors who have gone on and have made successful careers in theatre, cinema and television.
