The hand of beautiful rich heiress, Portia, can only be won by a lucky suitor through a game of chance... Her dashing and debonair lover, Bassanio, borrows a large sum of money from his flamboyant friend and benefactor, Antonio, The Merchant of Venice. Antonio, in turn has borrowed the cash from his old rival, Shylock, the moneylender, promising a pound of flesh as collateral. These intertwined stories spiral out of control when Shylock's daughter Jessica elopes with Bassanio's friend, Lorenzo. And Antonio's fortunes crash, leaving him unable to pay back his dues.
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is a universal tale showcasing human beings' propensity for love and hatred, generosity and greed, forgiveness or the lack of it. A deep satire on society then and now, it was traditionally classified as a comedy with confused love triangles at its core, but is also an exciting thriller: a dark and twisted tragedy with a dramatic climax.
