INDIRA, a three act play, concerns the turbulent nine years (1975-84) of the Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's life. The play opens with her declaration of National Emergency in 1975 and ends with her unfortunate assassination in 1984.
The play, however, is not a dry documentation of historical events. It seeks to give an idea of Mrs Gandhi's state of mind during that fateful era. It renders her close relations with her celebrated father, and first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, her sons Sanjay and Rajeev, daughters-in-law Maneka and Sonia, her close companions, Pupul Jayakar, Siddharth Shankar Re and her dependable secretary, Shri R. K. Dhawan among others.
The play has been written and directed by the renowned playwright Ratnakar Matkari. INDIRA has also been translated into English by a Chennai based writer.
