Directors Note

Welcome to our production of "Art" in Mumbai- a metropolis of high contradictions and ever-widening polarities. Here, high 'art' wrestles with Bollywood kitsch; where those that can afford ' haute couture' can't pronounce it correctly; where the most pressing use of a cellular phone is to call the wife or servant from the elevator to have the house- slippers and a glass of cold water ready; where everybody is a model and those that aren't, claim to have step with one; where a 'Bandit Queen' is considered fit to run the country, but the film can't run at all; where the beggar children can't return to their ring-leaders till they've begged their daily Quota; where the rich children don't come home till they've blown ten thousand of paper's black money; where the literate don't vote for the illiterates who rule the country; where most people think ABCL are the first four letters of the alphabet; where depending on your accent, a request for 'coke' could quench your thirst or satiate your sexual cravings; and where finally. infidelity has become a form of fidelity!

To survive 'amchi Mumbai' you have to have 'art' - the 'art' of survival, the 'art' of diplomacy and the 'art' of friedship.

Hopefully, this play 'Art' will speak to each of you in a unique way, and if you've had even one true friend, this play will tickle your funny-bone and also touch some nerves. And if you've ever been tempted to buy the Emperor's New Wardrobe, rest assured you're not alone! if nothing else, this play reminds us that no matter who we are or where we're from, it is best to be true to your he(Art)!!
