British Council India's YCE - Performing Arts Award...The Shortlisted Finalists...

The YCE awards by the British Council aim to reward creative entrepreneurs based in India for their contribution to their respective sectors, which include the Performing Arts. The YCE award programme goes beyond simply recognising the achievements of these entrepreneurs by providing them a platform to begin a dialogue with their UK counterparts.

The program also aims to link them with potential investment and mentoring opportunities in partnership with the Indian Angel Network (IAN), which is India's first and largest business angel network with more than 120 individual and institutional members from India and overseas.

Below are profiles of the candidates who have been shortlisted in the Performing Arts category. The winners will be announced in September 2010.

ANIBRAN GHOSHAnirban Ghosh, Co-Founder, Director, Art Tree Academy of Music and Performing Arts
ArtTree Academy of Music and Performing Arts, part of ArtTree production Pvt. Ltd, was incorporated in Feb 2009 with the vision to provide quality education in the field of Music and Performing Arts. It is inclusive of an event management company, an artiste management company and a production house under the banner of ArtTree. They are the first of its kind independent academy offering courses in Music, Dance, Acting and Theatre, not just for recreational purposes but to train professionals. With student strength of more than 350 and a faculty base of more than 20 in just a year's time, he has achieved remarkable visibility in Delhi. Anirban's passion for music led him to also perform alongside legendary musicians like Zakir Hussain, Pt Rajendra Prasanna, Mandolin Maestro U Srinivas and Louis Banks. www.arttreeindia.com

AMITESH GROVERAmitesh Grover, Director, Amitesh Grover
Performance Maker, New Media Artist and pedagogue, National School of Drama (India) alumnus Amitesh Grover has created 15 Performances & Mixed-Media Installations, which have taken a total of 85 shows across 6 countries till January 2010. Having completed his MA (Performance Arts) from University of Arts London, UK in 2006, he went on to focus on exploring the live interface between the body and media in performance. His work has been shown in Switzerland, U.K., China, Romania, Oman and India. He is the recipient of numerous awards including SNA (Bismillah Khan) National Award for Theatre Direction (2009), Pro Helvetia Award for Artist Residency (Switzerland, 2008) and The Charles Wallace Scholarship Award, U.K. (2005). He has also been on the jury of TheatreSpektakel'08. At present, Mr. Grover lectures at National School of Drama, India and is a freelance artist. http://amiteshgrover.blogspot.com/

KANAK GUPTAKanak Gupta, Co-founder, Director, Theatrecian
Theatrecian is recognized as one of India's most prolific theatre groups. They are an entertainment company, focussed on promoting theatre & cinema with the aim to develop and young talent to take up performing arts as a viable career option. They produce plays, conduct workshops, showcase world cinema movies, organize customized corporate events, make ad-films and short-films, and would be soon venturing into the world of feature films. An MBA by qualification he has worked as a management consultant trained with some renowned names such as Late Shyamanand Jalan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rohit Pombra. Whilst living in Europe, he enrolled for workshops with some of the best known names including the Royal Shakespeare Society of Great Britain, Matt Vaughan School of Drama, Whitechapel Dramatics Society and The Company of Angels to enhance his performing arts skills and help Theatrecian. www.theatrecian.org

NIKHIL HAZARENikhil Hazare, Owner, Swarnamadhya Theatres
Swarnamadhya is a professional theatre company independent of experimental or commercial classification. They ideate, produce plays and events. Their ability to market and generate income from their creativity has helped to bridge the gap between education & execution leading to many accepting theatre as a career option. The 50th show of Aadipashya (presentation of the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex in south central temple tradition - Keertan) won him various awards, reviews and critical acclaim, thus setting an example for several theatre practitioners to think beyond the conventional scene. It aims to achieve greater heights by associating with MTDC to promote tourism industry. Directing India's first audio film and appreciation from Oscar award winner Rasool Pukutty (sound designer, Slum Dog Milliner) was an outcome of his perseverance in taking theatre outside the realm of convention. www.swarnamadhy.com

MANGESH KUMAR GURUMURTHYMagesh Kumar Gurumurthy, Co-founder, IndianStage
IndianStage is a sustainable and profitable entertainment company focussing on performing arts. They generate income by producing their own shows, marketing them and through sale of tickets thereby delivering rich LIVE entertainment experience to the audience. Indianstage.in, their online portal has a registered fan base, a network of strategic locations and venues and allows for generation of sponsorship. They also promote third-party shows through online ticketing. They explore newer ways of promoting shows to their fan base, source quality content, generate ideas for effective production (mostly back-stage) and technological inputs to reach out to the wider network. PAPA CJPapa CJ, Owner, Papa CJ
He is a professional stand-up comedian performing globally under the brand name Papa CJ and has been the face of Indian stand-up comedy in many countries. He has toured Singapore, South Africa, Canada and the US over the last few years. In 2008, he also took part in NBC's TV Show Last Comic Standing where from amongst the thousands of contestants he made it to the final ten. In addition he is currently growing and developing the local comedy circuit in India through open mic nights for over a year and has toured British ventriloquist Paul Zerdin in India. He uses comedy as a vehicle to support underprivileged children in India out of child labour and bringing them back into the formal schooling system through his registered charity. He has organised and performed at fundraising nights in London for the past four consecutive years in aid of this charity that is funded largely by his comedy. www.papacj.com

PAPA CJKuljeet Singh, Co-Founder, Atelier Theatre Company
Theatre practitioner by choice, Kuljeet founded Atelier Theatre Company in 2004. Atelier is an expression of "movement" and "space". Its objective is to create a changing space and environment for all forms of expressions specially the performing arts. Within this short-yet-long journey, with profound interest in education and zeal for theatre, he has managed to showcase theatre productions par excellence: Goodbye Blue Sky, SUS, Seema to name a few; build a theatre studio, ACT (Atelier's Community Theatre) for rehearsals and workshops; create an annual property AYTW (Atelier's Youth Theatre Week), Asia's Biggest Annual Youth Theatre Week; developed and expanded revenues for the group through Atelier Kidz Programme for school children. He has devised and designed workshops on Creative Teaching and Creative Learning, incorporating Drama and Theatre-in-Education techniques.
