What role can art and artists play in realising the democratic principles of the nation-state of India, for the nation-state of India?

The opening lines of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution constitute India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, and to secure to all Indian citizens justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of our Constitution, said about the preamble: "It was, indeed, a way of life, which recognizes liberty, equality and fraternity as the principles of life and which cannot be divorced from each other: Liberty cannot be divorced from equality; equality cannot be divorced from liberty. Nor can liberty and equality be divorced from fraternity. Without equality, liberty would produce the supremacy of the few over the many. Equality without liberty would kill individual initiative. Without fraternity, liberty and equality could not become a natural course of things."

Junoon's 'Mumbai Local' invites Lokshahir Sambhaji Bhagat (poet, singer, protest musician) once again. An inspiring force in the Dalit movement, and an insistent voice for the principles of democracy, Sambhaji will introduce the artists movement "Kalasangini", which seeks to build a force on the side of democracy. Kalasangini trains young artists - Dalits, women, workers - in theatre, film, music and the use of digital technology. The idea is simple and beautiful - how can artists become active proponents of the principles of democracy? How can the promises made through our constitution, and so succinctly and powerfully put forth in the preamble, be realised through a people's movement of people's art?
