"How Free Is Free Speech?": Find out with Salil Tripathi at Junoon's 'Mumbai Local'...
November 27, 2018 3:00:07 PM IST MTG editorial
Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of democracy. But do we really understand what it is and why it matters? How does the banning of a book directly affect the world we individually inhabit? Why should we care if an artist or writer is interred or imprisoned? And how do we negotiate hate speech, dangerous speech, or speech that may offend us or some section of society?
Salil Tripathi has had a long-term engagement with free speech. A teenager during the Emergency, a young man at the time of Jayaprakash Narayan and the promise of the Janata Party, he found himself going public on the side of free speech, campaigning against censorship and distributing anti-emergency literature in a clandestine manner in South Bombay's Gujarati homes. In 1982, when there was an attempt to stop Vijay Tendulkar's play GHASIRAM KOTWAL from travelling to a festival abroad, he wrote a piece defending the play, his first article defending free speech. Defending the publication of Salman Rushdie'sThe Satanic Verses came naturally to him.
Since then his work as a journalist, as a member of PEN International’s Writers in Prison committee, and as a writer has stayed closely linked to this passionate commitment to free speech.
Salil Tripathi will lead the upcoming session at Junoon's 'Mumbai Local'. He will discuss free speech, its nuances and its promises to the citizens of India. This conversation will be based on actual events that he has addressed in his book, Offence: The Hindu Case, and elsewhere, on his own direct engagement with issues of free speech, and on his keen observation of global trends and national responses that affect our reality in India today.
The session has been curated by Sanjna Kapoor.
