Kadambari: A Play That Redefines a Forgotten Muse
by Arop R on May 5 2025 7:54PM  (IST)

I’ve had the privilege of watching Kadambari twice, and each time I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for Meghna Roy Choudhury’s thoughtful writing and direction. The play tells the story of Kadambari Devi, Rabindranath Tagore’s sister-in-law, who entered the Jorasanko Thakur Bari household as a child bride at nine. More than family, she became an intellectual companion to the young Rabi, inspiring much of his early work. This production reveals their platonic yet profound bond, portraying Kadambari not as a tragic figure defined by her death, but as a complex, influential woman. Her imprint is seen in Tagore’s iconic characters—Charulata, Mrinalini, Bimala—and the play restores her rightful place among them. I was moved by how the narrative reframes her life, breaking from the usual portrayal of her as a shadowed, misunderstood figure. Full credit to the outstanding cast—Ipshita Singh Chakraborty, Priyanka, Rishabh Kanti, Aditi Arora, Ayush Thakur, Abhijeet Vikram Singh—and the talented technical team, who together brought this story to life with such depth and sensitivity. My sincere appreciation and best wishes to the entire team for their future endeavors.
