this one is not for those who might risk die laughing. it’s an absolute killer and we never laughed so much. it’s not for the arty types who will intellectualise existence. its for those who would love to laugh. glad it’s back.

The Comedy Kitchen
by Chitra Sengupta on May 20 2018 11:07AM  (IST)

I have seen this show in Bombay and Bangalore and it never fails to deliver. What is unique about this production is the motley genres of comedy it explores. From slapstick to witty humour, there is something for everyone.

It's an interesting mix of original plays like A Fable Attempt and A Class Act and adapted ones like Okay! and Mr Kashmakash. What I liked the most was that the adaptations weren't blatant copies of the original plays. They had been modified very interestingly in accordance to the Indian context.

I went for their Bangalore show recently, where they received a standing ovation, very deservingly so. I really enjoyed it which is why I'm writing this review. I don't think anyone will go home disappointed.

A light hearted evening
by Karthik Iyer on May 20 2018 10:49AM  (IST)

I watched comedy kitchen along with a few colleagues from work. They had heard good things about the show from their friends, and having nothing to do that weekend, I tagged along.

First of all, the concept of a show with many different kinds of stories appealed to me. The characters in the stories were totally absurd but were relatable and well portrayed. The most hilarious performance of the evening was by Apratim who has an impeccable sense of comic timing.

I also liked the selection of the pieces which brought out, in a light hearted way, the cruelty inflicted on unwitting people like you and mee, by the absurd world.

I think Deepa's review is constructive and the show definitely has room to improve. But seeing only the negative views being expressed made me decide to write a review of my experience watching comedy kitchen, which was pleasant and very enjoyable, and I would recommend you to give it a shot. I feel you will come away liking something or the other and not feel shortchanged.

Great show, great performances
by Mishtu on May 20 2018 10:36AM  (IST)

I had heard about Comedy Kitchen from several of my friends who follow English theatre in Calcutta. So I caught a show a couple of years ago, and it was in Bengali and vernacularized, and super awesome. Now it seems that they've re-adapted the pieces in English and Hindu and packaging it in bombay..i wish I could have caught the show myself, but I highly recommend it

Great to see it back
by Aditya Vishlen on May 20 2018 10:32AM  (IST)

I remember watching this in 2015 , and being amazed at the comic timing this group had. Having watched lots - and I mean LOTS - of comic plays, I know the regular populist slapstick from the classy. This was a brilliant evening. Don’t know if the same set of plays is back, but I’m definitely checking it out again.

Comedy Kitchen performance on Jan 2 - far from funny - not worth it
by Anne Maria on Jan 2 2016 11:38PM  (IST)

I went for Comedy Kitchen having read the short write-up on bookmyshow which promised a "1 hour 30 minute" show comprising "8 thought-provoking plays" at Rs. 660. I write this review because I am a regular at CLC - however, this show did not live up to CLC standards - perhaps it was the particular day's performance and choice of plays since the producer says the show is "critically acclaimed" elsewhere - but either way, please read this so that you have your expectations set before you see the show.

The show ended up being far from thought-provoking - the humour was amateur relying more on slapstick and exaggerated absurdities than witty repartee. The 8 plays depicted did not match the ones that had been mentioned in the write-up on bookmyshow (except for one about a person on a quiz show who answers the previous question, which ended up being the closest to humourous). The rest of the plays around a classroom scene, monty's funeral eulogy, an absurd job interview, 4 people complaining about life and others were a combination of college-level humour, monologues where a person read from a paper and exaggerated forced humour. What was also mentioned as being a 90-minute performance ended in half the time and in 45 minutes we were told the show was over post which a number of people (both frequent CLC-goers and first-timers who had come from out of town to see the show) registered their disappointment at the show quality and length.

I write this so that you go in with the right expectations before this show and because there were not enough reviews when I first booked it. If you prefer witty humour, I would strongly recommend choosing the regular CLC standup shows which are brilliant!
