Theatre Personality Jaydev Hattangady Passes Away...
MTG editorial
This has been a bad year for the Marathi Theatre institution Awishkar, which has lost three of its strongest supporters and members. First it was Vijay Tendulkar, then it was Chetan Datar and now it is Jaydev Hattangady. Jaydev passed away on 5th December 2008 in the wee hours of the morning. He was around 60 years old and was suffering from cancer.
An alumnus of the National School of Drama (NSD), Jaydev Hattangady will perhaps be best remembered as a theatre director and educator. He conducted regular theatre workshops at Awishkar and along with his wife Rohini Hattangady ran Kalashray, under whose banner he not only directed productions but also sought to develop it as a centre for theatre education. One of his recent productions was Badal Sircars EVAM INDRAJIT. Jaydev also directed plays for Awishkar.
The MS University in Baroda appointed him as a Professor to their Department of Dramatics in 1994 and he was also a visiting faculty at institutions such as the Goa Kala Academy, the South Gujarat University, the Punjab University and at the Academy of Theatre Arts, Mumbai University.
