Marathi play TU selected for International Theatre Festival in Cairo

MTG editorial

The Pune based Marathi play TU, which has had shows in Mumbai and elsewhere was the only Indian play that was selected for the 11-day International Festival of Experimental Theatre in Cairo that began on 10th October 2008. The play, which is part of the Prithvi Festival this year (6th November to 25th November 2008) has been written by Satee, directed by Mohit Takalkar and produced by Aasakta.

TU, which revolves around the Sufi poetry of Jelalluddin Rumi was also awarded the Mahindra Award for Theatre Excellence (META) in the light design category. The lights in the play have been designed by Pradeep Vaidya. At the Cairo festival the play was the third Indian entry in the 20-year history of the festival.

Recent productions of Aasakta such as MATRA RATRA and the childrens play BED KE NEECHE REHNEWALI have also been appreciated. Mohit Takalkar is indeed one of the most promising directors to watch out for in Marathi Theatre today. He is ably supported by Aashish Mehta, who is a very efficient manager of the group and one of its prominent members too.
