Theatrecian is regarded as one of the most prolific theatre companies in Kolkata. The company has presented work by playwrights belonging to the 'absurd theatre movement'. These include Edward Albee, Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter. Theatrecian performed Albee's THE ZOO STORY at the Prithvi Theatre in 2006 and later again in early 2009, an adaptation of the same play was performed as a solo act by Tathagata Chowdhary, who also scripted the play titled THE MUMBAI ZOO.
Now Kolkata based director Tathagata Chowdhary is once again back in Mumbai. He has directed THE DUMB WAITER and THE ROOM. Both these plays will be performed as a double bill on the 21st of June 2009 at 8:00 pm at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai.
The two plays to be performed are being staged as a mark of tribute to the Nobel laureate Harold Pinter. This is Theatrecian's first independent presentation and first time performers comprise the cast. Theatrecian chose on THE ROOM because it is one of Pinter’s earliest plays.
In the DUMB WAITER, an interesting theatre device has been experimented with. Avijit, an expert in physical theatre from Kolkata will add a special touch to the performance. Pinter's plays are coloured with subtle irony and subdued comedy. A sudden suffocating violence emerges out of guilt and insecurity are depicted in the presentations.
