On Sunday, 7th August 2011, the winners of the Sultan Padamsee award were announced and felicitated at the Little Theatre at the National Centre of Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai. The event, which was organised by Raell Padamsee's Ace Productions, and hosted by Sabira Merchant, was attended by a small group of people, mostly family, friends and acquaintances of the erstwhile Theatre Group (TG), notably Alyque Padamsee. TG's legacy to the English stage in Mumbai is formidable.
The Sultan Padamsee award which was instituted in 1966 after TG's founder, Bobby Sultan Padamsee, has been revived after a long hiatus since the eighties. The award is for playwrights of Indian origin to encourage original, Indian English theatre. While participating playwrights may write the play in any language, they must have an English translation of the play.
Six plays were nominated this year of which Ram Ganesh Kamatham's ULTIMATE KURUKSHETRA bagged the first prize, which came with an award of Rs. One Lakh. The two runners-up are Chanakya Vyas' TALES OF KUTTY and Sabina Mehta Jaitley's NASREEN. The runners-up were awarded Rs. 10,000 each.COLLECTOR OF MEMORIES by Aarthi Menon, KARNI by Dr Manasee Palshikar and LIMBO by Manjima Chatterjee were the other plays.
Excerpts from each of the nominated plays were performed by actors who frequently work with Akvarious Productions. Akarsh Khurana of Akvarious was in fact one of the judges along with Dolly Thakore, Lillete Dubey and Ayesha Sani. Yet, it might be too early to say how the full-fledged productions of these plays may turn out to be even as the little bits of performances were cheered upon.
