Gallery Beyond Presents Jyoti Dogra's 'The Doorway'...

"The Doorway", is a collection of real and imagined stories that have been woven together in a physical narrative exploring the nature of our physical inhabiting of 'closed' and 'open' spaces. While some of the material in the piece is loosely autobiographical; the rest has been drawn from images or impressions of life around us, some from fairy tales and folk songs, and some from entirely imaginary experiences. The narratives are communicated through bodily images, gestures, and sounds [mumblings / chants], with minimal spoken text.

The piece, rather than looking to convey the specifics of these stories, aims, instead, to use them as provocations, to evoke associations or stories in the mind of the spectator - i.e. to find ways through which this personal material can end up seeming to allude to or suggest other stories, drawn from the experience and life of the individuals watching.

The piece is an ongoing process-based work, whose constituent material remains fluid. It has been evolving through a series of performances and rehearsals over the course of the last year. Having premiered at Gallery Beyond in April 2009, the piece has been performed/ travelled to in Ujjain, Bhopal, Pondicherry, Trivandrum, Trichur, New Delhi, Jabalpur and Katni through the year. It now returns to Gallery Beyond for the original audience to view it a second time, to explore the associations and stories the piece brings to them in the second viewing.

The piece would be performed again, before the same audience, at the beginning of next year. Information about this performance would be provided in advance.

Time: 11.30 am, 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm (Three shows)
Duration: 75 minutes.
Venue: Gallery Beyond, 1st Floor, Great Western Building, Near Lion's Gate, Fort, Mumbai
