On the 1st of July, Theatre Professionals Pvt Ltd in an ambitious plan will unveil what they deem to be India's answer to a world-class drama school, which brings faculty members trained from across the world, together with masters from the deepest traditions of Indian theatre.
The promise: To formally train acting hopefuls and effectively equip them towards a professional career in theatre and the creative industries.
Located at the Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh in Girgaum - famous in the 1950s for being the foundry of Marathi theatre practice - the DSM will give performers a chance to train in an environment that demands rigour, focus, and discipline.
The DSM has been started by Jehan Sam Manekshaw of Theatre Professionals, a theatre training, education, and professional capacity-building organisation headquartered in Mumbai. The DSM will be accepting applications from April 5 2013 and will start its first year long programme on July 1 2013.
"It's not just a case of supply and demand of drama schools, but more so an urgent need to create a new standard of professional theatre in this country. The Drama School is the first, and aims to be the best step one can take, in that direction," says co-founder and Director of Theatre Professionals, Jehan Sam Manekshaw.
Jehan Manekshaw has engaged the support of critically-acclaimed stage and film actors Geetanjali Kulkarni (NSD), Padma Damodaran (MA, East 15 Acting School), Yuki Ellias (London International School of Performing Arts, London; Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq, Paris), Deepal Doshi (MFA, Dell'Arte School of Physical Theatre, LA), Deshik Vansadia (Shakespeare and Co., Stella Adler Acting), as well as accomplished Theatre Directors Sankar Venkateswaran (Artistic Director, Theatre Roots and Wings; Theatre Training Research and Practice Institute, Singapore), Daniel Goldman (Artistic Director, Tangram Theatre Company & CASA Festival of Latin American Theatre in London; Andamio 90 School of Dramatic Arts, Buenos Aires; Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq, Paris), to name a few of the many others as faculty members at the DSM. Each of the faculty members have been trained in or have engaged with some of the best drama schools in the world.
The Programme :
The Drama School will start with a one-year certificate-programme in Acting and Theatre Making which will include
6 Months of Training :
Conditioning The Actor, Understanding Theatre-Making and Story-Telling, Theatre History, Theory and Research on other practices.
6 Months of Working on a professionally-directed Touring Production
Two co-productions between Theatre Professionals and a practising theatre company will be commissioned to be created and toured for general audiences for six months.
Internships and Research:
Students will be introduced to a number of groups from across the country and will spend time attending rehearsals, and working for these groups in order to develop further perspectives on the actual sector as it is. They will also be required to do research project on a theatre practice from somewhere in the world.
Application Criteria:
The minimum criteria for application is that you should be an individual with a Bachelor's degree or equivalent work/life experience, and have an active interest in the field of dramatic arts.
Application Deadline: May 15.
Admission Results: June 1.
School opens on: July 1
