Most people who knew Zohra Sehgal (Sahibzadi Zohra Begum Mumtaz-ullah Khan) as a performer would immediately recall her exuberance and her zest. She always appeared lively, never mind how old she was getting.
She had a great career in performance, starting with Uday Shankar's dance troupe in the mid 1930s. She met her husband Kameshwar Sehgal during that time. The couple later moved to Lahore. Partition changed things however, and they came to Bombay. It was at this time Zohra Sehgal became associated with Prithviraj Kapur's theatre. The couple had two children, Kiran and Pavan.
Zohra Sehgal's first film was with Merchant Ivory Productions in London. In India, Bollywood found in her the perfect grandmother and she acted in a number of films such as Dil Se, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Veer Zara and others.
In 1998, she was awarded the Padma Shri and in 2010, the Padma Vibhushan.
She was 102 when she passed away on July 10 2014.
Watch her recite 'Abhi Toh Main Jawan Hoon'. There couldn't be a better way to remember her and her great spirit.
