Ank was created by Dinesh Thakur on 1st October, 1976. The group's first performance was Badal Sircar's sombre play BAKI ITIHAS at a Durga pandal.

Preeta Mathur Thakur, the leading lady of the theatre group recalls its history. She says: "We will probably revisit history when we perform our play PRASHN PANCHALI at Shivaranjani's Yari Road Durga pandal this year. Reminiscing, she adds: "Dineshji realised that it was necessary to first get the audiences into the theatre with lighter comedies before presenting them choice fare like BAKI ITIHAS. It was a tumultuous journey for Dineshji and his faithful band trying to bring the Hindi audiences into the theatre. But today the challenges are slightly different. With Dineshji's passing, the honeymoon period for me and some of my committed colleagues is over. The challenge is not only to keep the group afloat and flourishing but to also determine a direction and focus on our personal growth as actors. We may miss Dineshji's sagacity and his towering personality, but his vision guides us. We are gearing up for the completion of 40 years of Ank."

At its 39th anniversary, the group will stage KAAMIYA and JAAT HI POOCHHO SADHU KI at Prithvi theatre on 1st and 2nd October 2015.
