The 19th century playwright and actor, Philip King, was one of the masters of farce. He enthralled his audience with his twisted yet funny situations and highly exaggerated reactions to those situations. Taking a cue from the late theatre man, Karla Singh has directed a musical farce titled KNOCK KNOCK,WHO'S THERE?
"Life is too serious; so that's why it's so important to break away and have fun. That is what the play is, a fun-filled romp on the crazy side at the antics of seven very different people in Mumbai,'' says Karla Singh.
The play follows the life of two girls staying in a rented apartment. Among other characters, opposite to their apartment is another house occupied by a young gentleman. In the course of the play, one of them tells a lie. Hence, to cover up this lie, they make up another one, which eventually snowballs into a mountain of similar lies. Karla also recounts her memories during rehearsals and tells us that she never laughed this much in a long time, and adds, ''I am sure the audience will laugh as much.''
Apart from bizarre situational goof-ups, the play incorporates dance and music. ''Karla has choreographed all the dance pieces. There are times when all of us dance together, and at times individually,'' says Danesh Irani, who acts in the play. He also adds that Karla is dancing in the play as well.
KNOCK, KNOCK, WHO'S THERE? will premiere on 27th February at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA at 7.30pm and has another show on 28th February at St. Andrew's Auditorium at 7.30pm.
