India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) in collaboration with G5AFoundation for Contemporary Culture presentsAKSHAYAMBARA by Dramanon, Bangalore, and directed by Sharanya Ramprakash, IFA grantee and theatre practitioner. AKSHAYAMBARA is an experimental play that uses both modern theatrical tools and the dance drama form ofYakshagana, to create a contemporary narrative that raises questions on female representation and male ownership. Drawing from research and personal experience, the performance imagines a reversal of roles in the popularYakshaganaplot of 'Draupadi Vastrapaharana'. The play seeks to explore the conflicts around tradition, gender, power, and morality inherent in the form of Yakshagana.
The play premiered at the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival, 2015 and has been nominated under several categories in the upcoming Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) 2016.
The director received a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, under its Arts Practice programme, with part support from Voltas Limited. Grant showcases of India Foundation for the Arts in Mumbai are supported by the Bajaj Group.
