Arjun's sharp arrows, Bheem's mighty power, Yudhister's righteousness, Nakul and Sahadev's dexterity and Krishna's wisdom helped the Pandavas win the bloody war at Kurukshetra. But the irony was such that all except Yudhister could reach heaven. Mahabharata with its great fratricidal war has all the excellent elements of drama. It has complex characters and a layered narrative. That is why the Mahabharata has been open to interpretations and retellings.
Peter Brook was inspired by the Mahabharata 30 years ago and staged a production running for nine hours based on the epic. It ran from dawn to dusk. The production made history.
Now the veteran director has returned to the text. His new production BATTLEFIELD co-directed with Marie-Helene Estienne is now focused only on the war in Kurukshetra. Profound questions about life and death are raised in the play.
The play premiered at Theatre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris, and is now touring the world. The Indian premiere takes place in March 2016.
"It is an honour for NCPA to host the Indian premier of the legendary director, Peter Brook's production. It's a wonderful opportunity for theatre lovers, students and scholars to watch the work of one of the greatest directors of all time," says Deepa Gahlot, Head - Programming (Theatre & Film).
BATTLEFIELD will be staged at the Tata Theatre, NCPA from 5th to 7th March and then from 8th to 12th March 2016.
