''I feel I owe her. What can I do?''

It's a story of how the life of one amazing woman is enacted by another. In over 3000 shows. For more than 27 years. How does it feel to live and breathe with a single character, day in and day out, for so many years? To be constant partners and share a life?

Junoon's 'Mumbai Local' will host Sushama Deshpande – actor, practicing theatre journalist and communicator – to Mumbai Local this week. She will be speaking about an experience that is very close to her heart and promises to be very eye-opening for us.

Sushamatai's play WHAY MEE SAVITRIBAI is iconic. Not just in Maharashtra, but across the country. Based on the life of social reformer and educationist, Savitribai Phule, this piece has been performed in many unconventional theatre spaces and has connected with diverse audiences for almost three decades. The play was translated into Hindi 25 years ago and has even travelled to places like Uttaranchal and Chhattisgarh.

While the play has evoked wonderful, deep responses to Savitiribai Phule's life from audiences of every kind, it also holds a great personal significance in Sushamatai's life. The play was her source of inspiration when she started working with rural women in 1997 and further, with other communities, addressing social issues of gender and sexuality. Sushamatai connects with the life of Savitribai not just as performer, but as a reformer, a dreamer and most importantly, a woman.

In this 'Mumbai Local', Sushamatai will share how she created this play and character. And how the play, in turn, created parts of her own personality as well. She will also explain the connection she shares with other women saints of Maharashtra. Through her stories, experiences and some enthralling bits of performance, you will be treated to a glimpse of how deeply personal theatre can be.
