Originally written as an English play, MOHAN NO MASALO, is yet another feather in Gujarati director Manoj Shah's repertoire that largely consists of biographical plays. It highlights Mahatma Gandhi's formative years since his childhood.
''The drama starts when Mohandas Gandhi started school, then goes to college and ends before he assumes the responsibility of being the Mahatma. The play essentially deals with his journey of finding his strengths and weaknesses,'' says Manoj Shah.
Before he attempted to bring the solo play on stage in English, Manoj Shah thought of performing it in Gujarati. According to Shah, the play instantly got a positive response from the audience members. On more than one occasion, parents approached him to stage the play in English, as they felt their children were more familiar with the language. Since he had the script ready, he performed the play in several schools. Soon enough, he was approached by a school in Madhya Pradesh that wanted him to stage the play in Hindi.
Now, the play is set to open in Mumbai in these three different languages on the same day. When asked if staging all three versions on the same day was a deliberate choice, Shah has an interesting theory. ''In the morning, the crowd at Prithvi Theatre mostly consists of children; in the evening mostly college students visit the venue and later in the evening, senior citizens or parents come. Hence, I can address three different generations on a single day,'' says Shah.
Pratik Gandhi plays Gandhi in all three renditions of the play.
MOHAN NO MASALO will be staged on 10th June at 12 pm, 6 pm and 9 pm at Prithvi Theatre.
