The 1954 American drama, TWELVE ANGRY MEN by Reginald Rose , is a great play, which became famous for its film version directed by Sidney Lumet and played by some fine actors, including Henry Fonda.
Rage Productions, helmed by the trio - Rajit Kapoor, Shernaz Patel and Rahul DaCunha have taken upon themselves to bring the classic on stage. The play is directed by Nadir Khan, and is titled 12 ANGRY JURORS. It departs from the original play and film however and includes women in the cast.
This is also the fourth play to be staged under the banner of Aditya Birla Group's theatre initiative Aadyam this year.
The story revolves around an eighteen-year-old boy who is on trial for murdering his abusive father. A jury of 12 people has been appointed to deliberate on the matter, and the evidence is against the boy. The jury is about to come to a decision but is stopped by a lone dissenting juror who presents the case in a new light. For the verdict to be accepted, all jurors have to come to a unanimous decision. After this episode, each and every juror re-opens the case, and looks at it from a fresh pair of eyes while examining their own attitudes.
Nadir says, ''Themes of justice, social inequality, prejudice and social responsibility, to name a few, are all present throughout. But at its very heart, for me, it's a damning exploration of a world that is too ready and too quick to accept explanations that are handed to them. Just because one is offered something, does not mean that one has to accept it.''
The production's first few shows:
