A rare episode of Kathakali will be staged during the inaugural function of the diamond jubilee celebration of the Western region of theKerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy on 2nd September 2017 at 6 pm, Terna Auditorium, Nerul West. The function will be inaugurated by K.P.A.C Lalitha, the celebrated theatre and cine artiste and the Chairperson of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy.
Kathakali as an art form is known for its obscurity both in verses and acting. But the role of Aashari (carpenter) in the story Bakavadham (killing of Bakasura; an episode from the Mahabharata) has the ability to change that perception.
The character communicates directly with the spectator, with the help of humour and folklore, and is an epitome of acting. In Kathakali, such characters are rare.
The living legend of Kathakali, Kottakkal Devdas, will metamorphose into this character in Mumbai.
Besides this special performance, a series of performances like Arjuna Nrutham, shadow puppetry, Nangiarkoothu, Ottan Thullal, Mohiniyattam, Carnatic music, Thayambaka, Chavittunatakam, as well as a series of talks, workshops, face to face with the artistes and poets' meetwill be organised in Mumbai and other areas of the western region as apart of this celebration. The western zone includes Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Konkan, Nasik, Baroda, Surat, Ahmedabad, Rajasthan.
