Jaimini Pathak

What is the role of theatre in our times? What can it contribute to our knowledge of our aspirations as a people, as a nation? And what happens when such plays tour across the country?

Our school history books often tell us a singular master story of India's independence - a story that has a sort of linear inevitability to it. But the birth of a nation - how it is fought for, what aspirations are articulated for it, and how it finally comes about - are not inevitable or foregone conclusions. The birth of a nation arises out of the sustained effort of determined people, who have the courage, imagination, capacity and stamina for political action and change. And it arises out of a great churning, informed and driven by a multiplicity of viewpoints, desires and strategic actions.

We are delighted to invite Jaimini Pathak - actor, director and founder of Working Title - to Mumbai Local once again, this time to share his extraordinary experiences with his play MAHADEVBHAI. Originally written and performed after the 2002 killings in Gujarat, this solo actor play attempts to understand the thoughts and principles that Gandhi stood for, as well as the debates and conversations with historical characters like Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, B.R. Ambedkar, and Mahadevbhai amongst others. The play has completed more than 300 performances since 2002 and is performed in 3 different languages - English, Hindi or Gujarati.

At this Mumbai Local, Jaimini will take you through his experiences of learning about Gandhi's philosophy and mind through the creation of this play. He will also share his extraordinary experiences of touring MAHADEVBHAI across India and the enormous learning it gave him about our country. Expect an evening of anecdotes and insights with their fair share of humour, delightful excerpts from performance and a thoughtful contemplation of the aspirations that lay behind the founding of our country.

Date: 2nd September 2017
