SWEET & SOUR - A TASTE OF LIFE

By MTG editorial

The play is based on the story 'Neighbours' by late Shri Sujit Sen, and has been adapted by Sarita Hussain. The play revolves around three people. Anand is a confused husband, who's having an extramarital affair with Radhika, his wife Kiran's best friend. Kiran finds out about this on their wedding anniversary, when Radhika and Anand calmly emerge from her bedroom and have to deal with her unexpected presence. Anand leaves Kiran because she's become 'a wife', which - though the cause of his displeasure now - was his demand when they first got married.

Kiran is broken, when Anand leaves her and after major introspection arrives at a decision - suicide. Anand, who has moved in with Radhika, is confronted with a side of her, that he was never aware of. She's maniacal about cleanliness and totally self-absorbed. Here, he has to do everything himself, whereas with Kiran - his wish was her command. Just as Kiran is about to hang herself, there's a knock at the door, and conscience appears in the guise of a new neighbour - Prabhat - who convinces her about the futility of suicide.

Anand is annoyed and disillusioned with Radhika and resolves to leave her and return to Kiran. Prabhat then meets Radhika in a cafeteria and proceeds to show her who 'she' really is. Anand returns home to suicide notes lying on the ground. Assuming the worst, he's about to kill himself, when the doorbell rings and Prabhat provides him with reasons for living. After Prabhat's departure, Kiran comes back. Was Prabhat a reality or just a figment of imagination to give hope when there was none?
