The Opera and the Gran Teatre del Liceu
During my visit to Barcelona in April 2005, I had the good opportunity to see an opera adapted from William Shakespeare's classic romantic comedy, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. It was my first time at an opera house and I tried to take in as much as I could not only from the spectacle that the monumental production offered but also from the theatre in which it was being staged.
I was helped adequately in my endeavour by Adela Rocha, the International Relations manager at the Liceu. She was kind and friendly and gave me all the possible information about the theatre and the opera that I was to witness. The experience, to say the least was beautiful and I hope to recreate some of its aura for you here by providing a brief profile about the theatre and a note on the opera that I saw.
Both the profile of the theatre and the note on the opera have been edited by me from the material that I was given and from the on-line information available. The pictures of the theatre and of the opera- A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM that are displayed here, have also been borrowed from the theatre's website and from the material I was given.
In order to contextualize the activities undertaken by the theatre and make them more relevant, I have added some basic information about what an opera is and have mentioned some of the art form's greatest composers. I have tried to assimilate my own views about the spectacle I saw but by no means should my views be taken as an analysis or a review. My personal views are at best a layman's response to an art form about which I have still, much to learn.
