Lalubhai Desai, a retired municipal officer and his wife Maya ben Desai, a retired primary school teacher are opposites in temperament. Lalubhai is a happy go lucky man whereas Mayaben is a disciplinarian. Their son Sanjay is 28 years old and is unmarried. He is intelligent and loving by nature and wants to stay away from the ego clashes of his parents.

Sanjay is always worried about the polar opposite natures of his parents and he wonders if his parents will ever have a happy, retired life together or will it have to be him who will have to adjust. One day Sanjay tells his parents that he is in love with a Bengali girl. Upon hearing the news the parents revolt as the girl is not from their caste. They decide to find a suitable girl of their own caste.

The daughter-in-law’s arrival does not make things any different for Sanjay’s parents. They continue to have major differences of opinion. Sanjay is all the more troubled now. Other complications occur in the meanwhile owing to his father’s carefree behaviour. Finally Sanjay decides to set things right with his wife, Shobhna’s help.
