In its series of performing literature, Dinesh Thakur's Ank Theatre stages Krishna Sobti's rich Hindi text 'Mitro Marjani'. Shattering the image of the revolutionary and ideal-upholding women characters of great literature, Mitro is a controversial heroine of true Punjabi soil, embodied with love, grit, passion & fertility, unafraid to air her carnal desires in the face of conventional religion & society...... yet.... desperately seeking a... fulfillment.



Mitro, married into a conventional Punjabi house-hold, yet comes from an unconventional background where passions are unbridled and tongues express with aplomb the feelings of the flesh. Feeling trapped and suffocated in the straitjacketed role of woman who is a second class citizen of the household she nurtures, she can yet appreciate the love and caring of a family. But how does she reconcile herself as a caring homemaker with her bold instincts of individuality?

Peopled with characters we may find in our own homes, Krishna Sobti weaves a world quintessentially Indian.
