RAAI KA PAHAAD

By MTG editorial

The play is a Hindi adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. It is set in an imaginary village of Rajasthan in the house of Thakur Loknath Pratap. It explores the patriarchal mindset prevalent in India, especially in an orthodox village of Rajasthan. It depicts how so much importance is given to woman chastity and how any dent in a woman's reputation can have serious consequence for the woman involved and her family. The play also explores the themes of construction of identity and the illusory nature of reality.

Rajkumar Padmveer along with Kunwar Singh and Bikramjeet visit Thakur Loknath. Padmveer's stepbrother, Jayant Singh also accompanies him. Kunwar Singh falls in love with Thakur's daughter, Heera while Bikramjeet has a history with Heera's cousin sister Bindiya. Bindiya and Bikram are arch enemies and abhors the concepts love and marriage. Padmveer decides to woo Heera for Kunwar Singh while also making Bindiya and Bikram fall in love with each other. Jayant Singh doesn't like this environment full of celebrations and decides to break off Heera and Kunwar Singh's marriage by slandering her. He succeeds in the beginning. But the misunderstandings created by Jayant Singh are later cleared out by the help of house puppets who also work as servants. Heera and Kunwar along with Bindiya and Bikram finally decide to marry.
