SAKHARAM BINDER (MARATHI)

Vijay Tendulkar's notorious anti-hero Sakharam Binder is back on stage to outrage the moral sense of the audience yet again. Marathi stage veteran Arun Hornekar resurrects Sakharam, as he directs as well as essays the title role.

The play takes a scathing look at a man's reckless lifestyle in rural Konkan. Sakharam is a book binder by profession and that is how he gets his name. Footloose and fancy free, Sakharam seeks out vulnerable women who have been driven out of homes and promises to give them two meals and two sarees in lieu of domestic help and sexual favours.

a strange way, Sakharam's debauchery is beyond moral judgment because he doesn't force these women into anything. He informs them about his expectations and then lets them decide. Whether he is exploiting these hapless women is a question that his latest mistress Champa sorts out.
