GIRGAON VIA DADAR is a research based production based on events of the Samyukta Maharashtra Chalwal of 1960- to convey the history behind the establishment of the state of Maharashtra- For example- The history of the Hutatmas, the 105 Martyrs.
In the first half of the play- the plot revolves in a chawl in 1950-55, introducing the social and political situation of that period. Characters like Rama, Devayani, Raghunath, Girish, Anant, Editor Kamble and Madhav are representative of the people in Mumbai participating in the movement which ended tragically in January 1960.
The second half presents the period of agitation in different places, where demonstrators were fired upon by the police and 105 people were shot during the movement. Few decades later, the real incidents of history seem to be ignored and conveniently forgotten, Devayani's memories oscillate between the past and the present where she struggles to convey the truth about the movement to the current generation.
The MD college students first staged the one-act play at the INT competition and the play since has participated in other youth theatre competitions and has won awards. Now the production as a full-length play hopes to reach a larger audience through performances on the professional stage.
