Dear Reader,
Our website had earlier written about the folk performing arts' group Kabir Kala Manch and about husband-wife duo Sachin Mali and Sheetal Sathe who are implicated by the State as alleged Maoists under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Their case is still on but they have been granted bail; Sachin after 4 years in prison. Even as the legal machinery grinds away, this is what the couple did and continue to do. They stage protest theatre and song against grievous inequality, inequity and indignity endured by the marginalised sections of their community, Dalits in particular. Now moving away from Kabir Kala Manch, they have set up their own Youtube channel 'The War Beats' in collaboration with the famous Lokshahir Sambhaji Bhagat.
Namrata Bhingarde reports on this channel in our Features' section.
The Company Theatre's workspace in Kamshet has opened doors to its annual, all-night festival in celebration of the performing arts. The festival is in collaboration with the Bangalore-based Sandbox Collective. So if you are inclined to have a night out, away from the bustle of the city, the upcoming Kamshet Arts Festival will welcome you. You will be treated to a series of performances through the night till early dawn, and this will include the sweet little comedy DALAN by Natak Company, QUISSEBAAZI by Danish Husain and Kashinath Singh, an act by actor Satchit Puranik, among Indian and Western musical recitals and other programmes. RSVP is required.
We have updated our website with new plays in Marathi and in Gujarati that includes the Pune-based Marathi play SAMAJSWASTHYA, written by Ajit Dalvi and directed by Atul Pethe. The play is based on social activist and reformer Raghunath Dhondo Karve, who started the first birth control clinic in Mumbai in the 1920s and faced much opposition and ostracism for the same. The play will be staged in Mumbai next weekend.
Cheers,
Deepa Punjani
