Theatre Schools
"Lalit Kala Kendra"
(Centre for Performing Arts at Pune University)

Headed by Professor Satish Alekar, acclaimed playwright and theatre person, the Centre for Performing Arts, popularly known as the Lalit Kala Kendra was established at the University of Pune in 1987. The Centre offers courses in the Performing Arts on a self-supportive basis. The courses offered by the centre are unique in that students are able to engage with the different performing arts such as dance, music and theatre under one umbrella. The Gurukul way of imparting knowledge is another attribute to the courses offered. The centre strives to strike a balance between the rich cultural heritage of India and contemporary sensibilities. The students have to complete a number of credits as required by the syllabus and grades are given as the students fulfill the requirements of the practical courses at the end of each term. All the theory classes, riyaz, Guru-in-residence programs, workshops are conducted on the campus. The Centre has many eminent Gurus as visiting faculty who contribute to the teaching besides accepting the students as Sishyas.

Since the centre is not aided by the University of Pune, it is imperative that every interested student, irrespective of category pays fees. The students would also do well to remember that the courses offered by the centre are not easy market-oriented, employment generating courses. The degrees such as the B.A. and the M.A. offered by the centre are academic and professional in nature. Students after completion of the course opt for careers in classical music, dance, theatre, television and film. Some students have even joined the Ministry of I & B, Government of India, Delhi. The students can also apply for fellowships to the Department of Culture, Govt. of India that lead to specialized training. Dance, Music and theatre students also go on to acquire degrees such as the M.F.A. from foreign universities. Some students enroll for Ph.D.

The above information is just a brief introduction to the Lalit Kala Kendra. Interested students can obtain more information about the B.A. and M.A. courses, fee structure, faculty, collaboration, etc. by visiting the website- www.unipune.ernet.in
