Madman and Me invites you to a nine-day residency program on Introduction to ‘Self-With-Others’, an improvisation-based physical approach to performance training, with John Britton in Almora, Uttarakhand this May.
Training through physical improvisation, the residency will look at the meeting point between improvised and rehearsed work - between the expected and the unexpected - so that you, the performer, develop your skills in keeping performance really spontaneous - however carefully rehearsed it is. We will develop the physical and mental disciplines that allow us to perform our work always ‘for the first time’, even if the work is something we have performed a hundred times before.
‘Self-With-Others’ is a psycho-physical approach that encourages bringing the mind and body into every action, the unifying of thought and action. It is based on a set of clear, interconnected principles, the most important being the need for performers to find deep pleasure in their work. If you are not enjoying your work, you are not doing it properly.
Each morning we will train together through a process called 'Self-With-Others' that John Britton has been developing for nearly 20 years. Self-With-Others is a physical, improvisation-based approach to developing physical skill and presence that forms the basis of all his directing and the teaching at The DUENDE School of Ensemble Physical Theatre. The work will be physical demanding and very joyful. Participants will need a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to push themselves.
About John Britton:
John is the founder and Artistic Director of DUENDE. He is also the Director of The DUENDE School of Ensemble Physical Theatre.
Since 1988, he has directed, written and performed in over 80 productions across a wide range of art-forms, including theatre, dance, circus, children’s theatre, opera, improvisation, educational theatre and work that defies all categorisation.
Moving to Australia, he encountered the work of Al Wunder and established The Quiddity Ensemble where he began developing some of the approaches to training ensemble that later became 'Self With Others'. He now spends much of the year touring the world, teaching, performing and directing.
In addition to his teaching work, John is a director of Physical and Interdisciplinary performances.
