Just 3 benches laid out on the stage in front of the audience represent “The Park”.
The play is a sarcastic comment on the growing intolerance amongst us as what starts of as light hearted altercation evolves into a serious conflict about space, territory and ownership.
To sum up in one line in the play, uttered by one of the character is that this bench belongs to him because he came here before all of them and hence he has a history to this place. The statement sticks to the mind in synonymous with reflective of the current times that we live in.
‘The Park` originally written in Hindi by Manav Kaul, is an important voice in contemporary Indian theatre. It deals with a problem of space, which is unfortunately universal, never reaches its amicable solution till the end.
