 JAYDRATH VADH Review

One of the stories that has the most complex set of emotions is that of Jaydrath. In a chain of happenings, Arjuna has to kill Jaydrath, who has received a boon from his father that anyone who drops his head to the ground, will die himself. Krishna hatches a plan wherein after Arjuna strikes an arrow at Jaydrath, his severed head travels to his father, who drops it on the ground. That way, Arjuna is saved himself.

Noted producer and mentor, Ashok Purang has chosen to direct a drama based on Maithili Sharan Gupt's poem. The poem is a love story as it captures the dialogue between Abhimanyu who is all set to lose his life by wanting to enter the chakravyuh as his wife puts forth her point of view. The poem is a script that lasts long enough to be an act in itself. The performance of the poem is fulfilling to watch at many levels. The beautiful language is one reason that makes it a worthwhile to watch.

Sudhish Sinha, the actor, does a competent job of remembering the lines and delivering them without a fumble. He also acts out varied emotions during he performance. In particular, the portions in which he has brought to tears, leave an impact.

The performance is such that it can be watched as a lesson in the language, resulting in informed discussions after watching the play. While the sets were adequate, more art work and including more actors in small appearances could enhance the ability of the play to keep the audience engaged.
