Stories In A Song

How do you regard the Mumbai theatre scene?

It is not robotic, it has a feel/life in it. That you miss in most parts of your country.

Have you read any interesting books/articles concerning the theatre? Why did you find them interesting?

This one journal Rang Prasang that NSD publishes, it is very useful for young theatre practitioners like me. I get to know so many interesting stories about theatrewallahs, current theatre scene in India, some good plays of new playwrights to read and interviews and articles of renowned theatre personalities to read.

If you have ever been a part of a theatre production/s, can you recall an event that was insightful, significant or simply humorous?

During one of my play KHABSOORAT BAHU, after a scene in a black out one of the actor had to go in the wings, she got blank in dark and banged on cyclorama, the lights came on and the audience saw her rubbing her head.

Can you think of a foreign production that you found remarkable? Why?

I don't remember the name, it was on - how the first drop of water comes to us and how everything changes after that. Only one actor and the way he has done it with the help of props and set was truly outstanding.

Your favourite director/actor/music or set designer...

Director - Naseeruddin Shah & Makrand Deshpande
Actor - Naseeruddin Shah & Vinay Kumar
Music - Anadi Nagar
Set Designer - Sridev

A significant Indian production that you may have witnessed.....

The magical plays of Ratan Thiyam, Habib Tanvir & Veenapani Chawla

Life in the theatre without the humble batata-wada or the cutting chai... or can you recall the best gastronomic experience you've had in the precincts of the theatre to date?

Batata Wada and cutting chai tells us that we don't have enough money in theatre and I don't think it will change soon, but I hope one day it will. Till then we have no option apart from loving them."
